South Korea is pushing to revise a civil code to change the legal status of animals.
The nation’s justice ministry on Monday said that in its revised bill a new clause has been added to “Article 98” to state that “animals are not objects.”
Under the current law, animals are treated equally to inanimate objects, leaving animal abusers to face property damage charges at most.
But, with the revision, animal abuse violators will be held both civilly and criminally liable for their acts.
The ministry explained the move comes in line with the country’s growing support for animal welfare.
