South Korea today reported 970 new cases of COVID-19, the first time there have been fewer than a thousand since Christmas Eve.
There have been fewer tests done, however, because of the holiday and the weekend.
All but 24 of the new cases were transmitted locally, and most of the local cases are in the greater Seoul area.
As South Korea battles this third wave of the virus, the authorities are expected to make a decision today on whether or not to raise the distancing rules to the highest level.
The threshold for doing so is if the average number of daily cases is above a thousand, and as of today it’s 999.
If South Korea does go to distancing level three, only essential businesses can open and only essential workers can go to work.
The authorities have been reluctant to take that step because of the social and economic disruption it would cause.
