Samsung heir Lee Jae-yong has appeared in court for the first time in ten months for a hearing in his ongoing trial for bribery.
The Seoul High Court had asked him to attend a hearing last month but waived that request due to the death of Lee’s father, Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee.
In 2017, the heir was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison for paying several million dollars in bribes to Choi Soon-sil, a longtime friend of former President Park Geun-hye, as he sought to secure control of Samsung Group.
The case was recently tossed back to the High Court by the Supreme Court to hear again of a bribery charge which had not been included in the original case.
