A second Korean New Deal strategic meeting was held on Tuesdayto discuss creative ways to expand the initiative nationwide.
Mayors and governors from the country’s 17 cities and provinces took part in the discussion and presented their individual regional development ideas.
Some examples includebuilding an offshore wind power complex in Jeollanam-do Province, creating a local, public delivery app for Gyeonggi-do Province, and even establishing a megacity in the Southeastern part of the country.

“We plan to build a railway network that can reach all areas in the Southeast and is currently being negotiated with the government. The ‘Regional Balance New Deal’ can only be achieved when a wide-reaching public transport network has been established in regions outside the capital area.”

The metropolitan cities of Busan and Ulsan, as well as Gyeongsangnam-do Province have collectively expressed interest in becoming a combined megacity with one conglomerate administration.
While Jeollanam-do Province has plans for an offshore wind power generator complex to help boost employment.

“More than 41.seven billion U.S. dollars are to be invested in this complex. It will help nurture around four-hundred-50 companies and create one-hundred-20-thousand new jobs.”

By the year 2030, the complex aims to generate eight.two gigawatts of electricityenough to power the cities of Seoul and Incheon for one year.
Gyeonggi-do Province, meanwhile, plans to create its own delivery app in line with the Digital New Deal Initiative.
The province’s governor pointed out that an abuse of market power by digital platform companies is becoming a serious problem.

“The essence of the app is creating a dynamic in which the benefits of the digital economy go to the producer, and the residents who are the main agents of the economy.”

By using a type of regional currency, the app also aims to provide a boost to the local economy.
