The South Korean government is set to introduce a bill to parliament on Wednesday that will make abortions legal for pregnancies under 14 weeks.
Currently, abortions are against the law at any stage.
The bill would also allow abortions at up to 24 weeks in cases of rape or when the mother’s health is at risk.
The legislature faces a deadline of year’s end set by the Constitutional Court to pass a new abortion law after the existing ban was ruled unconstitutional.
The court ruled that the ban violated women’s rights.
Some activists, however, say the stage-based proposal doesn’t go far enough to protect women’s rights.
