Time Magazine on Wednesday named the 100 most influential people of 2020, and making the list are Jeong Eun-kyeong, Commissioner of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, as well as Oscar-winning film director Bong Joon-ho.
Commissioner Jeong’s inclusion in particular was praised by South Korean President Moon Jae-in who lauded her openness and transparency throughout the coronavirus outbreak.
A Blue House official also said that ‘K-quarantine’ has been recognized as the global standard for other countries to followadding that the inclusion of Jeong Eun-kyeong could be an opportunity to share the nation’s quarantine efforts and achievements with the U.S.
As the first female chief of the KDCA, Jeong has been fighting on the frontline.
During daily COVID-19 briefings throughout the year, the Commissioner’s hair has been visibly more grayon account of the dedication shown to provide information on the latest updates and preventative measures.
Named in the artists’ category is Bong Joon-ho, multi-Oscar winning director of the movie ‘Parasite’.
According to his introduction written by Academy Award-winning actor Tilda Swinton, Bong is described as having “risen into the 2020 vision of the entire cine-passionate planet like a new sun”.
In the past, South Korean boyband BTS featured in the list, appearing in 2019.
The K-pop group which topped Billboard music charts, was praised for being cultural ambassadors for the global music industry.
While in 2018, South Korean President Moon was among the list of world leaders following his efforts to improve inter-Korean relations.
Others to make the list for 2020 are health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci, who was selected for his honest guidance in navigating the pandemic in the U.S., as well as WHO leader Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus for his determination throughout COVID-19.
